Internship at KSAU-HS

Internship is an important element in all academic programs at KSAU-HS. At the College of Medicine, for example, medical internship is a transitional period for newly graduated doctors with rotations in different specialties. Recently, there has been evaluation and modification of traditional internship toward advancement by introducing innovative methods of adult learning by creating competency-based curricula.
After completing Phases II and III, all students must complete a year-long supervised medical internship (MI) at a hospital before they are eligible for graduation.

The internship program has a framework, which assists medical education providers and clinical supervisors to provide medical interns a structured and planned program of education. It also enables the medical interns to assess their learning and training needs and plan for professional development activities. This framework has four domains: clinical management, medical practice, professionalism, and communication skills.

Medical Interns will rotate in six specialties: medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, family & community medicine and mental health, in addition to one more additional elective specialty.

The internship at
College of Nursing (CON) has two Phases. Phase I covers an eight-month period. Its structure facilitates consolidation of Nurse Interns’ clinical experience during the program in an applied healthcare delivery environment. It includes four clinical placements: Adult Medical (3 months), Adult Surgical (3 months), Pediatric Rotation (1 month), and Maternity (1 month).  At the completion of Phase I, a Nurse Intern is expected to be able to meet independently the nursing care needs of full load patients assignment on day, night and weekend shifts in area of assignment.

Prior to the end of month seven the Nurse Intern will be invited to attend an individualized career pathway planning session with an advisory panel comprising of representation from CON and participating hospitals. A Nurse Intern is expected to explore her career choices before attending the counseling session. The advisory panel is expected to provide adequate information about selected area of practice to help the Nurse Intern make an informed career decision.  Information from this session will be utilized to plan for Phase II of the program (general or specialized pathway).

Phase II of the internship covers a four month duration. A Nurse Intern may choose either to spend the four months in general medical/surgical area, or in specialty area of her choice based on career counseling.  This phase emphasizes progressive development and broadening of clinical skills in the selected clinical areas. If a Nurse Intern selects a specialty area of practice, then the focus will be on building the foundation for the residency program which she has chosen to join after completion of the internship year. A Nurse Intern will not move forward to this phase unless she has demonstrated ability to meet the nursing care needs of a full patient load on day, night, and weekend, and achieves all required competencies specified in Phase I of the program.  Upon completion of Phase II, the Nurse Intern is expected to demonstrate that she has achieved all the goals and objectives of the agreed internship path and met all the Saudi Nursing Council and Ministry of Higher Education requirements for registration as a Staff Nurse 1 level.
