KSAU-HS Postgraduate Education Academic Affairs announces the 2015 schedule of Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Course.
The Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Course provides the participant with a safe, reliable method for immediate management of the injured patient and the basic knowledge necessary to:
• Rapid accurate assessment.
• Resuscitate and stabilize by priority.
• Determine needs and capabilities.
• Arrange for transfer to definitive care.
• Assure optimum care

Instructor / Faculty Course:
Participants will have the knowledge and skills required for rapidly identifying, managing, and treating adult and pediatric multi-system trauma patients.
Upon successful completion of the ATLS Student Course, the participant will be able to:
1. Demonstrate concepts/principles of primary and secondary assessment
2. Establish management priorities
3. Initiate primary/secondary management
4. Demonstrate the skills necessary to assess/manage the critically injured patient
Description and ATLS Educational Format:
This is a highly interactive two and a half days scenario-based course and Instructors facilitate interactive lecture discussion. Participants then proceed to ‘hands-on’ scenario-based skill stations and apply the principles of ATLS.
Course material includes:
A text book and a pretest questions for self-assessment.
Course Overview, Initial Assessment and Management, Airway and Ventilatory Management, Shock, Thoracic Trauma, Abdominal Trauma, Surgical Skills Practicum Discussion, Head Trauma, Spine and Spinal Cord Trauma, Musculoskeletal Trauma, Injury Due To Burn and Cold, Pediatric Trauma, Trauma in Elderly, Trauma in Women, Transfer to Definitive Care
ATLS Skills Stations:
Initial Assessment Demonstration, Surgical Lab Skill Station, Airway & Ventilatory Management, Shock Assessment & Management, X-Ray Identification of Thoracic Trauma, Pre-Test Group Discussion, Secondary Survey, Head & Neck Trauma Assessment & Management, Spinal Cord Injury Assessment & Management, Musculoskeletal Trauma Assessment & Management, Triage Scenarios, Initial Assessment.
This course is designed for Doctors only. Nurses, Paramedics, EMT’s and Coordinators can attend this course as auditors only.
It is important that participants come well prepared and studied the entire ATLS student manual to be familiar with all subjects of the course.
Successful completion of the course involves attending the entire course, passing a-40 MCQ Examinations (with minimum score of 80%) and passing all the skill stations.
The ATLS Program is designed as a continuing medical education program and is not conducted on a pass/fail basis.
This course is accredited with 14 CME Hours by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCHS) (Student Course) and 9 CME Hours (Instructor Course).
Individuals who perform well and are observed by the ATLS faculty to possess a teaching capability will be invited to participate in the instructor course. Eligibility to participate is limited to physicians in countries where the ATLS program has been introduced and promulgated by the (ACS).
ATLS Instructor Course:
Course Purpose and Objective:
The ATLS Instructor Course is a highly intensive 1 ½ day course designed for doctors who satisfy the qualifications and characteristics of the model ATLS Instructor. Course Educator and faculty concentrate on teaching a variety of methods used to present information, guide the learner, communicate constructive criticism and evaluate performance. The Instructor Course teaches doctors how to teach in the ATLS Program. Knowledge of the medical core is not evaluated during this course; however, the ability to teach the Student course interactively and the affect as a potential instructor candidate is carefully evaluated.
Description and Educational Format:
• The Instructor Course is divided into 10 sessions:
Introduction to the Instructor Course, Course Design, Principles of Learning, Introduction to Microteaching as a concept and tool in the ATLS Program, ATLS Interactive Lecture and related Microteaching Sessions, ATLS Group Discussion and Triage Scenario Orientation, How to Teach Skills and Related Practice Skills Teaching, Teaching Initial Assessment Skills Station and related practice Sessions, Role and Responsibilities of Instructors, and Closure, Affect and Summary.
Participants must be identified as potential candidates to attend an Instructor Course based on their performance and attitude during their participation in a Student Course.
Candidates applying to participate in an Instructor Course must successfully complete an approved (ACS) ATLS Student Course within 3 years of applying for the Instructor Course.
Instructor Course participants need to adequately prepare for the course. In addition to their assignments (interactive lecture, skills-teaching and critiquing episodes), they must be assigned to carefully review related section and chapters of the manual.
Successful completion of the course involves attending the entire course, passing the Microteaching lecture, Teaching Skills Stations and Initial Assessment Skills Teaching Sessions.
