How will I know who my Academic Counselor is?
Academic counselors are COAMS faculty members. So your counselor will be a lecturer or professor from the same, or similar, discipline to your major. Your program will take care of the matching process for you and then provide the needed information via email at the beginning of the academic year.
How will I know when/where to meet with my Academic Counselor?
Your program admin will provide you with the date and location of the academic sessions. All information will be sent via email and will be posted on the Blackboard.
How long does a typical counseling session last?
The length of a counseling session varies from 15-30 minutes. COAMS academic counselor allocates 30 minutes per session. To ensure that you maximize your time during the counseling session, plan for what you wish to discuss during the session.
What will we talk about during the counseling session?
These sessions are spaces to have honest and open conversations with your counselor about really anything you prefer. It is a great opportunity for you to discuss general study planning, academic progress and achieving goals. You can also request any support you need, whether it's academic support, financial support or anything else. Your academic counselor can provide you with advice regarding your future career, and/or personal development.
What can I do if I have quick questions? Do I need to schedule an appointment?
If you have quick questions, you can visit your academic counselor during his/her office hours. You can also contact him/her through e-mail or office extension.
What is my responsibility to my Academic Counselor?
You have the responsibility to attend your scheduled sessions on time. In case you could not attend the session for any reason, you are responsible for apologizing from attending and re-schedule a new appointment through the counselor or the program's admin. You are also requested to maintain a high level of professionalism and respect toward your academic counselor.
Are counseling sessions confidential?
Yes, counseling sessions between you and your counselor are confidential. Your counseling record is not a part of your academic record.
There may be some cases when an adviser needs to disclose information to help you receive the best help and support you need.
How can I change my Academic Counselor?
To change your Academic Counselor, contact your program chairperson/ director directly and request to be assigned to a different counselor.
