Introduction to Healthcare Management PHSM 501

This course is designed to introduce course participants to the key concepts and principles of healthcare management, and to engage them in a scientific dialogue and discussion that will trigger their professional thinking throughout their future work in the context of the key public health issues and health systems management challenges reported in the international health arena and understand and apply these scientific evidence and experiences of other countries health systems to the Saudi context and the Gulf region.

Principles of Epidemiology PHEB 501

This course first describe the history, principles, and concepts of epidemiologic research in order to have clear understanding and able to apply measures of disease incidence (risk, rate and odds) and prevalence, and measures of association and public health impact. It usually makes to assess strengths and limitations of different sources of epidemiological data on health status and health service utilization in both industrialized and developing countries. However more understanding of the relevance and benefit of the discipline of basic epidemiology in health will be established and clear distinction between different types of epidemiological study designs will be studied. This will make student capable to use it in planning, conducting and evaluating epidemiologic studies as part of their project work.

 

Principles of Biostatistics PHEB 502

Statistic as science is become important for use in the different aspects. It brings more understanding of the concepts of statistical inference, the fundamentals probability theory and related analytical techniques. So hypothesis tests will be used side by side with the construct of confidence intervals in medical and public health context and how to make interpretation of linear and logistic regression and appreciate their strengths and assumption for their applications. The student will be able also to analyze and interpret data from epidemiological studies, make differences between qualitative and quantitative studies and finally be capable to obtain a thorough understanding of modern statistical computing.

 

Environmental Health PHPH 501

This course sets out to examine environmental health science and occupational health with particular emphasis on the regional and local context. The aim of the course is to introduce students to the nature and scope of environmental health and occupational health theory and practice. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of environmental health science issues and how they relate to public health in the Saudi Arabian economic and socio-cultural context.

 

Social and Behavioral Sciences for Healthcare PHPH 502

In the Social and Behavioral Science of Healthcare module, we begin with the multi-dimensional nature of the “New Public Health." To that end, the assumption underlying lectures, assignments and class discussions is an ecological model of health status. By ecological model, we mean the integration of health status, health seeking behavior, exposure to pathogens, gender, lifestyle, physical and social environment, socio-economic status, cultural affiliation, communication, and literacy, among others factors. We will explore how socio-ecological factors responsible for health-related behaviors lead to morbidity and premature mortality and how social science approaches may profitable be integrated into the resolution of health issues. This course will address the philosophical underpinnings, conceptual frameworks, and strategies for effective behavioral and social change efforts in public health.


 

Health Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation PHSM 502

This course sets to bring knowledge on the health policy process and its relationship to planning, monitoring and evaluation in planning, monitoring and evaluation (PM&E). It also will explain the basic concepts and tools involved in PM&E as well as trying to demonstrate understanding of how to use these concepts in the country context. Usually it have to state and analyze examples of PM&E in developing and middle income countries and use an appropriate Planning Framework for PM&E of health sector activities. It gives answers on the risks identification, assumptions and critical success factors.

 

Disease Prevention and Control PHPH 503

Selective chronic and communicable diseases will be studied in this course with more relevant to local context with the aim to introduce students to the principles of disease prevention and control. Conceptualization of prevention and control will be defined and discussed to make the student able to apply these concepts accordingly in the faced situation. It will enable participants to recognize and apply modern strategies, feasible ways and desirable methods of disease control and prevention in the Saudi Arabian economic and socio-cultural context.

 

Global  Public Health PHPH 604

This course will offer students an opportunity to deepen their knowledge and interest in the global health field. The purposes of this survey course are to provide an overview of current and emerging global health issues and their determinants; raise students' awareness of health issues that transcend national borders and culture and that require multinational and multi-sectoral action; describe interventions and programs being implemented by major governmental and non-governmental organizations to address key problems areas across the world; discuss different guiding philosophies behind specific health interventions; and identify factors that may impact the success or failure of an intervention.

 

Reproductive Health PHPH 601

The course covers a wide range of topics, including: the key concepts of reproductive health, health of women and child, prevalence of key reproductive health in Arab region, exploring reproductive health indicators, methods of contraceptives, impact of diversity on sexual health across the lifespan, infertility and unplanned pregnancy, sexual transmitted infections, violence against women as a reproductive health issue; meeting the reproductive health needs of “special" groups, including adolescents and refugees.

 

Health Promotion PHPH 504

This module will offer students an opportunity to deepen their knowledge and interest in health promotion. The purposes of this module are to provide an understanding and develop the skills necessary to carry out Health Promotion program planning regardless of the setting; provide both theoretical and practical information; build step by step format to make concepts clear and full process of health promotion planning understandable; present material on all three areas of program development: planning, implementing, and evaluating.

 

Nutrition and Public Health PHPH 602

The course will introduce the concepts of micro and macronutrients and malnutrition in public health and disease prevention. Global and local aspects of nutrition and health will also be given. Critically assess the consequences of exposure to diet, body size, and physical activity on health and ill-health and debate international trends and patterns in these situations. Evaluate the association between nutritional factors and disease and the importance of nutrition in the prevention of morbidity and mortality from chronic disease. Students will be able to apply methods for assessment of diet, anthropometry and physical activity.

 

Health Emergency & Preparedness PHPH 603

The course will provide good understanding of the impact of emergency situation and how to plan effectively to reduce and minimize the negative health outcomes. Case study from local and internationals with critical appraisal of different approaches used to alleviate the consequences of such disaster and emergencies.
