College of Public Health and Health Informatics Research
The College of Public Health and Health Informatics is committed to making significant contributions to public health and health informatics research to improve health outcomes on a local, regional and global level. Faculties of the college are actively involved in high caliber research through scientific inquiry and innovation in line with the university’s mission of “fostering excellence in innovative learning, scientific research, compassionate patient care and community health promotion and enhancement of healthcare development nationally and globally”.
The College of Public Health and Health Informatics is also committed to preparing the next generation of public health and health informatics researchers with the essential and life-long skills to produce scientifically rigorous research to address emerging public health and health informatics problems. All graduate students of the college will be expected to plan and conduct a research project towards the end of their studies. The student will choose a topic, develop the research question, undertake a literature review, identify the appropriate methodology for the study, collect data, analyze the data and effectively report the results of the research in a scientific manner. The student will be expected to write a research proposal prior to starting the research providing a detailed description of the project they will undertake.
Research interests/streams
Each of the College of Public Health and Health Informatics departments have their own research interests and streams with expert faculty specialized in specific areas.
The Department of Health Informatics faculty conduct original research in different areas in health informatics, health information technology and consumer healthcare. Specific areas of interest include and are not limited to electronic/personal medical records, consumer health informatics, technology adoption and healthcare management, data mining and machine learning in healthcare, big data and cloud computing, ontology based data integration and public health informatics.
The Department of Public Health faculty conduct both qualitative and quantitative research within areas which are related within the context of Saudi Arabia. The specific areas of research tackle areas of health systems such as primary health care services, health education in schools, main communicable and non-communicable diseases such as cancer and diabetics and research related to women’s health.
The Department of Health System Management
faculty conduct research in areas related to assessing safety culture among health care professionals in health institutions, health care management, quality improvement of health care systems, human resources management practices and health services policy.
The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics
faculty conduct research in topics describing the trend of diseases in the community. In addition, research within the department includes analyzing different risk factors related to common diseases and ill-health conditions such as those related to cardiovascular diseases or infectious diseases reported in health care settings in Saudi Arabia.
