This is an introductory level course designed to provide basic foundations in biochemistry. Focus is laid on the structure, function, and properties, of biomolecules; carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids and, in understanding the biochemical basis of health and disease. Basic material related to acid-base, buffers, intermolecular interactions, enzymes activities, and coenzymes will be taught. Fundamentals in biological processes including thermodynamics and stages of metabolism, will be briefly explained. The fundamentals of thermodynamics and the metabolic role of high-energy molecules will be discussed. Also, the mechanism of actions of enzymes, different types of inhibitors, and different modes of enzymes’ regulation will be discussed. The fundamental concepts of biomolecules digestion will be discussed. Four laboratory sessions will be conducted to illustrate aspects of the theoretical course and to teach students essential practical skills.
