The course will explore the mental health-mental illness continuum across the lifespan and gives students an understanding of basic mental processes and nursing interventions. Clinical experiences will enable each student to develop effective use of self and apply the therapeutic communication process and phases of the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship while incorporating the concept of health education in nursing. In addition, the clinical experience focuses on the nursing assessment and clinical management of patients with acute and chronic mental illnesses in the clinical setting. Cultural, ethical and legal dimensions are addressed in the delivery of nursing care. Students are required to achieve certain core clinical competencies appropriate for their level as an outcome of this course and they will be tracked by the collected matrix for BSN program clinical competencies. Field Experience: This course offers a total of 90 contact hours of clinical training in a variety of carefully selected and recognized Nursing Clinical Teaching Mental Health Hospitals and Departments. The college faculty will direct and supervise overall students’ clinical education through application of course’s learning outcomes and consistent clinical follow-up as guided by the course (BNUR 411) specification. Whereas the identified clinical teaching units in collaboration with its field staff will facilitate a conducive learning environment that is most supportive and highly constructive to enable students’ professional psychiatric nursing skills and competencies development. Jointly, CON-R faculty and field staff will ensure to carry out a comprehensive evaluation of the student’s clinical experience, achievements, and progress in relation to the predetermined course clinical learning outcomes.
